Praised for his “suave, empathetic baritone” and his “refined, charismatic” stage presence (The New York Times), Etienne Dupuis enjoys international acclaim, appearing regularly at the world’s most important opera stages and concert platforms.

Etienne opens his 2024/25 season in one of his signature roles, as Rodrigo di Posa in a new production of Don Carlo at the Wiener Staatsoper. Continuing his series of iconic Verdi debuts, he sings his first Macbeth in a new staging at the Washington National Opera, before reprising Rigoletto at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. After another run of Don Carlo at Wiener Staatsoper, Etienne stars as Don Giovanni at the Viennese opera house and sings his first Don Pedro in a concert performance of Donizetti’s Maria Padilla for his debut at the Teatro de la Maestranza of Sevilla. He concludes the season returning to the role of Conte di Luna in Il trovatore at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

In the 2023/24 season, Etienne made a series of role debuts: as Don Carlo di Vargas in La forza del destino at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, in the title role of Rigoletto in a new production at the Teatro Real Madrid, as Count Karl Gustav in the world premiere of Bilodeau’s La Reine-garçon at the Opéra de Montréal, as Paolo Albiani in Simon Boccanegra and Sancho Pança in a new production of Massenet’s Don Quichotte at the Opéra national de Paris. He also performed Germont in a concert performance of La traviata, made his Japan debut as Rigoletto on tour with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in Yokohama and Tokyo and reprised the role of Marcello in La bohème with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Bravo! Vail Music Festival in Colorado. Other recent performances brought the star baritone to the Paris Opéra, the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro Real of Madrid, San Francisco Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Opernhaus Zürich, Opéra de Lyon, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Opéra de Marseille, and the Opéra de Montréal.

His discography features a solo album with the string quartet Quator Claudel-Canimex (“Love Blows as the Wind Blows” for ATMA Classique), in addition to albums with the Orchestre regional Avignon-Provence (Universal), Sonya Yoncheva’s “Paris, mon amour” (Sony), L’Aiglon with Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (Decca), among others.

Born in Montréal, Etienne Dupuis completed his vocal studies at McGill University, later joining the Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal. When not travelling the world, Etienne lives in Paris with his wife, the soprano Nicole Car, and their son Noah. Together with Nicole, he is a co-Artistic Director of ICAV, the Canadian Vocal Arts Institute. Etienne is also an Ambassador of Opera for Peace. In 2021, Etienne was awarded the prestigious Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres recognition by the government of France.
