MAXIM VENGEROV
AT THE MONTREAL INTERNATIONAL MUSICAL COMPETITION

Montreal, Wednesday, November 14, 2012 – The Montreal International Musical Competition (MIMC) is pleased to announce the participation of violinist and conductor Maxim Vengerov for the 2013 violin edition; a new initiative, a benefit performance in support of the MIMC; and finally the MIMC reveals the names of the members of its international jury as well as the composer of the Canadian compulsory work.

CONCERT PRESTIGE
The MIMC is proud to present Concert prestige, a benefit performance bringing together world-renowned violinist Maxim Vengerov, young cellist Stéphane Tétreault, Radio-Canada Revelation 2011-2012, as well as pianist Serhiy Salov, the MIMC first prize winner in 2004. The Orchestre de chambre I Musici de Montréal and its Principal Conductor and Artistic Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni will join the trio for Beethoven’s Triple concerto. Completing the programme, I Musici will perform Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. The concert will take place at the Maison symphonique de Montréal, on Monday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m.

GUEST CONDUCTOR
It is with great pleasure that the MIMC will welcome Maxim Vengerov as the invited guest conductor of its 2013 violin edition. Mr. Vengerov will trade his bow for the baton to conduct the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, an important partner of the Competition. They will accompany the finalists on May 14 and 15 as well as the winners during the gala concert on May 17, at the Maison symphonique de Montréal.  During his last trip to Montreal, he shared some thoughts on his participation at the competition: “I am very honoured to participate in this event. I will then share the stage with the competitors and there will the public and prominent jury members… I understand that this may be impressive to young artists! However I am confident that this will be very good for them, very… therapeutic! I think that this experience will be great for us all.” The 2013 violin edition of the MIMC will take place from May 6 to 17.

MEMBERS OF THE INTERNATIONAL JURY
Presided by André Bourbeau, Co-Founder and President of the MIMC, the jury of the 2013 edition will be comprised of the following: from Sweden, the Founder and Artistic Director of the Verbier Festival, Martin T. Engstroem; from the United Kingdom, violinist Rodney Friend; from Austria, violinist and President of the International Fritz Kreisler Violin Competition, Michael Frischenschlager; from Japan, violinist and Professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Yuzuko Horigome; from France, violinist Régis Pasquier, Professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris; from Canada Barry Shiffman, violinist and violist as well as Associate Dean and Director of Chamber Music at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music and from the United States, violinist Kathleen Winkler, Dorothy Richard Starling Chair and Professor at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

COMPOSER OF THE CANADIAN COMPULSORY WORK
Since its inception, the MIMC commissions from a Canadian composer a five-minute work specifically written for the competition. This year, the work was commissioned from Montrealer Jean Lesage and will be played by each competitor during the quarter-final round. Jean Lesage has been very active on the Montréal music scene: from 1990 to 2011 he was a member of the artistic committee of the Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec. From 1987 to 1995, he was a reporter for the program Musique actuelle broadcast on Radio-Canada’s FM radio and from 1997 to 2008 he was editor-in-chief for the magazine Circuit where he continues his work as member of the editorial committee. Jean Lesage is a professor of composition and orchestration at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University.
