Turovsky

After obtaining a doctorate degree with commendation from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Yuli Turovsky won first prize at the USSR Cello Competition in 1969 and, the following year, was among the laureates of the 22^nd Prague Spring International Music Competition. His studies completed, he set out on the first of many tours around the world as a member and soloist of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra conducted by Rudolph Barchai. After becoming a Canadian citizen and settling in Montréal, Mr. Turovsky pursued his career as a soloist and a member of the Turovsky Duo with his wife, violinist Eleonora Turovsky. From 1977 to 1993, he also performed worldwide with the legendary Borodin Trio, of which he was a founding member, and continued to play as a soloist with the world’s leading orchestras. In 1983, Yuli Turovsky founded the Orchestre de chambre I Musici de Montréal (IMM), garnering numerous prestigious prizes. As a soloist and conductor of the IMM, he performs more than 100 concerts every year all over the world (Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas). In addition to his busy concert schedule, he is an active recording artist, with more than 80 CDs to his credit for Melodya, CBC, SRC, Chandos and Analekta record labels. Mr. Turovsky has been teaching at the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Music, where he has trained some of the most renowned cellists, for many years. He is also responsible for launching the International Competition for young soloists studying at the Orford Arts Centre, an institution where he served as artistic director for four years.
