Born in Vöcklabruck, Austria, baritone Wolfgang Holzmair studied at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien with Hilde Rössel-Majdan (voice) and Erik Werba (lied). He performs in recital throughout the world, including London, Lisbon, Moscow, New York, Seoul, Washington, and in major events such as Belfast Festival at Queen’s and Edinburgh International Festival, Gstaad Menuhin Festival (Switzerland), Bregenz and Carinthian Summer Festivals (Austria), in collaboration with leading musicians of our time.
Wolfgang Holzmair is also active in the opera world. Roles include Masino (Haydn’s La vera costanza), Papageno and Speaker of the Temple (Mozarts’ Die Zauberflöte), Don Alfonso (Mozart’s Così fan tutte), Eisenstein (J. Strauss‘ Die Fledermaus), Wolfram (Wagner’s Tannhäuser), Faninal (R. Strauss‘ Der Rosenkavalier), and Music Master (R. Strauss‘ Ariadne auf Naxos), among others. Equally in demand on the concert platform, he sings with leading European and American orchestras, under some of the most eminent conductors. His numerous recordings have met with critical acclaim; Brahms‘ Ein deutsches Requiem with Herbert Blomstedt won a Grammy Award.
Since 1998, he has been teaching lied and oratorio at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg and giving masterclasses in Europe, Japan and North America. He is also a visiting professor of the Royal Academy of Music and a fellow of the Royal College of Music (both in London).
