Spanish mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza is known around the world for her noble, refined timbre, and her musicality. Teresa Berganza received comprehensive musical training from the Madrid Conservatory of Music that included piano, organ, harmony, composition, conducting and, of course, voice, under the instruction of Lola Rodriguez de Aragon, a student of Elisabeth Schumann.
Her career began in 1957, after a triumphant appearance in the role of Dorabella Così fan tutte by Mozart at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Shortly thereafter, she was invited to sing the role of Cherubino in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro by the Glyndebourne Festival and performed with Maria Callas in Medea at the Dallas Civic Opera. This engagement was followed by invitations to appear in leading festivals and opera houses around the world: Milan, Vienna, Paris, London, New York, etc.
In addition to her operatic success, Ms. Berganza has been extremely active as a concert performer. Her broad knowledge of languages has helped her build a wide-reaching and varied repertory, and her exceptional vocal talent has enabled her to combine her own strength of expression with a respect of style.
In 1995, she became a member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, the first woman and the first singer to be so honoured in the 250-year history of the famed institution. She has also been named a Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres by the French Republic.
