Sumi Jo has established herself as one of her generation’s most sought-after sopranos. She has won many prestigious awards including first prizes at international competitions in Naples, Enna, Barcelona and Pretoria. In 1986, she was unanimously awarded first prize in the Premio Internazionale Carlo Alberto Cappelli at Verona, a competition open only to first prize-winners of other major competitions. She was elected as “Artist for Peace” of UNESCO in 2003. She currently has over 50 recordings to her credit, which include Grammy Award winning recording of R. Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten with Sir Georg Solti and of Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera under Herbert von Karajan.
Sumi Jo has performed various opera repertoires in addition to her world-renowned coloratura operas. Those include Violetta in Verdi’s La traviata (Toulon), Marie in Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment (in Santiago, Chile and Hamburg, Germany), and Juliette of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette (Rio de Janeiro Opera). Her latest opera performance includes Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia at Opéra Royal de Wallonie, in Belgium. She is also in constant demand as a concert artist in both for special events such as the FIFA World Cup or Winter Olympics closing ceremony in Sochi. In December 2014, she was also in Montréal for a Memorial concert at the Maison symphonique honouring the Canadian veterans of the Korean War.
