The renowned violinist Silvia Marcovici was born in Romania, and studied in Bacau and Bucharest with Stefan Gheorghiu. She won the Concours International Marguerite Long Jacques Thibaud in 1969 and the George Enescu International Competition in 1970, and made her professional debut at the age of 16 with the Residentie Orkest in The Hague. In 1972, she performed Glazunov’s Violin Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, conducted by Leopold Stokowski, a concert recorded by DECCA. Silvia Marcovici has appeared with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestra Sinfonica dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the New York Philharmonic, and several other US orchestras, under the direction of outstanding conductors such as Abbado, Comissiona, DePreist, Domingo, Haitink, Inbal, Järvi, Lopez-Cobos, Mehta, Muti, Previn and Rostropovich.
