After studies in singing and musicology, Rudolf Berger directed his first production, Mozart’s La Finta giardiniera, which he presented at the Baroque Theatre of the Imperial Castle of Schönbrunn (Austria) in 1984. Two years later, he was made director of production of the International Festival in Aix-en-Provence. In 1989 he joined the celebrated Parisian agency Musicaglotz and became responsible for its opera sector. The Vienna Staatsoper made Rudolf Berger Artistic Administrator in 1990. In September 1994, the board of the Vienna Chamber Opera asked him to step in after the sudden death of Hans Gabor. At the same time he was general director of the summer Mozart Festival in Schönbrunn and head of the International Belvedere competition for opera singers. ln September 1997, he became General Director of the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg,a position he held for six seasons. Convinced of the necessity to foster the career of young singers, he also established Les Jeunes Voix du Rhin, a workshop devoted to the blossoming of dozens of young artists each year. On September 1, 2003, Rudolf Berger became General Director of the prestigious Volksoper in Vienna.
