Rodney Friend has appeared worldwide with the greatest musicians of our time. In 1964, he became the youngest ever concertmaster of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, perform ing with Haitink, Barenboim, Solti, and Giulini. In 1975, he was invited by the New York Phil harmonic to be their concertmaster, playing concerts and recording worldwide with the or chestra under Bernstein, Boulez, and Mehta. On his return to London, he became concert master of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, also senior lecturer and consultant at the Royal College of Music. In 1991, he formed the Solomon Trio with whom he recorded and toured Europe extensively.
As a soloist, he has performed with most major orchestras in Europe, America, Scandinavia and the Far East, under such conductors as Haitink, Barbirolli, Mehta, Leinsdorf, Solti, Giulini, Davis and Roszdestvensky. Among his many recordings, his performances of the Britten and Bach concertos with the London Philharmonic Orchestra for EMI received the highest international acclaim.
Since 1995, Rodney Friend has travelled constantly as a soloist, teacher, director, and UK jury member for the international violin com petitions. He is Artistic Director of the Cam bridge International String Academy, and his books are published by Boosey and Hawkes. He plays a Guarnerius violin.
