Drawn to music from a very early age, Pierre Médecin studied flute and piano before going on to study fugue, harmony and countermelody with Georges Lauweryns and then Louis Fourestier.A pivotal moment in his career came when he met Wieland Wagner, grandson of the famous composer, and collaborated with the legendary Bayreuth Festival for three seasons. He then worked at the Munich Opera with Rudolph Hartmann, as well as alongside Georges Hirsch,general director of the Réunion des Théâtres Lyriques Nationaux in France. In 1957, he began his career as a director. His productions of Mozart, Strauss and Wagner operas in particular quickly earnied him critical acclaim. But it was his direction of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande in 1962, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth, that sealed Pierre Médecin’s reputation as one of the most gifted directors of his generation. He has held a number of key positions, notably as artistic advisor and artistic director of the Opéra de Nice, artistic director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, general manager of the Opéra Comique de Paris and chairman of the Chambre Professionnelle des Directeurs d’Opéra, a position he still holds. Pierre Médecin continues to direct today and serves as a jury member of numerous international music competitions.
