Philip Boswell joined the Canadian Opera Company as Associate Director of Operations in 1978, and has been its Artistic Administrator since 1981, serving under general directors Lotfi Mansouri, Brian Dickie, Richard Bradshaw and, currently, Alexander Neef. During this period, he has been instrumental in making the COC one of the foremost opera companies in North America and indeed the world. Recent credits include the first Canadian productions ofWagner’s Ring to open Toronto’s new Opera House, and Prokofiev’s monumental War and Peace presented in autumn 2008. A graduate of Harvard University, Philip Boswell has been involved in opera administration for his entire professional life. Highlights include stints with Santa Fe Opera (American première of Penderecki’s The Devils of Loudun;world première of Berio’s Opera), Italy’s Spoleto Festival (A foray into dance: Jerome Robbins’ Celebration: The Art of the Pas-de-Deux),Sarah Caldwell’s Opera Company of Boston (world première of the full five-act Paris version of Verdi’s Don Carlos; world première ofBerlioz’s uncut Les Troyens), and San Francisco Opera’s touring arm, Western Opera Theater (tours throughout the western U.S. and Alaska).
