Peter Rösel was born in Dresden, Germany and began to learn the piano at the age of six. He studied at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, first with Dmitri Bashkirov and later with Lev Oborin. While studying,he won prizes at several major competitions, including the International Schumann Competition in 1963, the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1966, and the Montréal International Music Competition in 1968. He has performed in over forty countries, appearing with such orchestras as the New York, Los Angeles, and Berlin philharmonics, the Detroit, Toronto, and Montréal symphony orchestras, the BBC Orchestras, and of course, the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden. Conductors with whom he has worked include Kurt Masur, Herbert Blomstedt, Charles Dutoit, Bernard Haitink, Günther Herbig, Dmitri Kitajenko, Kurt Sanderling,Yuri Temirkanov,and Klaus Tennstedt.His appearances at international festivals have been met with enthusiastic receptions from audiences and critics alike. He has also made numerous recordings, documenting his broad artistic range as one of the most highly acclaimed pianists of his generation.
