A graduate in piano and composing from the Moscow Conservatory, Mikhail Kollontay was awarded an honorary degree and special prize in 1982 from the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. His repertoire includes both volumes of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier and Chopin’s Ballads, as well as many contemporary works by Arzoumanov, Boutsko and Ryabov. His discography includes the piano works of Balakirev, recorded under the Russian Season label.
Mr. Kollontay made his debut as a composer in 1980. His Concerto for alto and orchestra received the Shostakovich Prize in 1981 and was recorded by Yuri Bashmet and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Vladimir Fedoseev. He has since composed an opera, three symphonies, a Requiem, works for chamber music ensembles, voice, choir, organ and numerous pieces for violin. Mikhail Kollontay has been teaching piano at the Moscow Conservatory since 1979 and at the Taiwan National College of the Arts since 2003.
