Michel Béroff graduated (premier prix de piano) from the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris (CNSMP) in 1966. The following year, he won the First Prize at the very first Olivier Messiaen International Piano Competition; he has since gone on to be regarded as one of the finest interpreters of the composer’s works.
Michel Béroff’s career has taken him all around the globe, performing with the world’s most prestigious orchestras, under the direction of such conductors as Abbado, Baren boim, Bernstein, Boulez, Dohnányi, Dutoit, Eschenbach, Gielen, Inbal, Jochum, Leinsdorf, Masur, Ozawa, Previn, Rostropovitch, Sinopoli, Solti, Tennstedt, and Zinman. He has made a great number of recordings for EMI, including the complete works for piano and orchestra by Liszt, Prokofiev, and Stravinsky, as well as works by Bach, Brahms, Schumann, Dvorák, Mussorgsky, Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Ravel, Messiaen, and Bartók. For Deutsche Grammophon, he recorded the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand by Ravel with the London Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Claudio Abbado. On the Denon label, he released Debussy’s complete works for piano. His recordings have won five “Grand prix du disque” from the Aca démie Charles Cros. He also took part in assembling a new edition of the works of Debussy for the “Wiener Urtext” publishing house, and, in 2006, he was asked by Japanese television network NHK to produce a series of 15 master classes on French music.
In recent seasons, Michel Béroff embarked on a major tour of England and Spain, and toured Japan three times. He also gave a number of concerts in Germany, Holland, Sweden, Finland, Greece, China, and North Korea, as well as in Brazil and in Portugal. In Paris, where he has been teaching at the CNSMP since 1989, he has also performed the complete piano works of Debussy and Janácek in concert.
