The 2011/12 season marks Kwamé Ryan’s fifth as the Music Director of the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, with which he has appeared throughout Europe and in Japan. As a guest conductor, last season he de buted with the Orchestre National de Belgique in June and at the Grant Park Festival in Chicago in July. In the fall of 2011, he conducted a new production of Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust for Staatsoper Stuttgart, and both the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and its contemporary ensemble. Mr. Ryan has worked with such orchestras as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orches tra, the SWR Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, the Symphonieorchester des Bayeris chen Rundfunks, the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Bayerisches Staatsorchester, and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. He held the position of General Music Director of Theater Freiburg and the Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg between 1999 and 2003, having previously been Assistant Conductor of Staatsoper Stuttgart. His close association with his mentor Peter Eötvös has seen him conduct the first French revival of the composer’s Tri Sestri at the Opéra de Lyon, and the German première of Le Balcon. He has also conducted Strauss’s Salome for the English National Opera, Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher for the Edinburgh International Festival, and the world première of Pintscher’s L’Espace dernier at the Opéra Bastille. He was awarded the title of Officer in France’s Order of Arts and Letters in 2010.
