Jean-Pierre Brossmann left the stage as a young baritone in 1972 to become an artist manager at the Organisation Artistique Internationale, headed by Michaël Rainer. This provided him with a unique opportunity to rub shoulders and deal with such artists as Arthur Rubinstein, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Daniel Barenboim, and Maurice Béjart. From 1974 to 1980, he joined Alain Lombard at the Opéra national du Rhin as assistant director and director of the troupe. In 1980, he was named the co-director of the Opéra de Lyon (where he went on to become chief executive in 1995), and created the Opéra de Lyon Orchestra in 1983 with John Eliot Gardiner. In 1996, he succeeded Stéphane Lissner as head of the Théâtre du Châtelet. He has also served as an artistic advisor for the casting of several opera films, and as an artistic director for many opera recordings produced by Erato, EMI, and Virgin. A Knight of the Legion of Honour and a Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters, Jean-Pierre Brossmann decided to cease all permanent activity in 2006. Through his friendship and affinity with Kent Nagano, he has maintained an advisory role for all vocal projects by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Currently residing in Marrakesh, he is now working with Pierre Olivier Bardet on Kaija Saariaho and Amin Maalouf’s opera film entitled L’Amour de Loin, which should begin filming in the summer of 2012.
