Hung-Kuan Chen has been invitedto perform with many of the world’s leading symphony orchestras such as Pittsburgh, Houston, Baltimore, Grand Park, Colorado, Israel, Tonhalle Zürich, Russian State, Tokyo, Taipei, Guangzhou and Montréal, under the baton of conductors of the highest caliber. His worldwide recital tours have taken him around the world. As a dedicated chamber mu sician, Hung-Kuan Chen has collaborated with many of his most distinguished colleagues, including Yo-Yo Ma, Chao Liang Lin, Denes Zsigmondy, Anthony Gigliotti, David Shifrin, Laurence Lesser and the Tokyo and the Shanghai string quartets. He has also played piano duets with Tema Blackstone, Anthony diBonaventura and Pi-hsien Chen. His interpretations can be heard on BMG and Bravo Recording labels. 

Mr. Chen’s career was launched when he won First Prize in the Young Concert Artists’ Auditions in New York in 1987. He has received many other prestigious awards including First Prize in the Ferruccio Busoni and Arthur Ru binstein international piano competitions along with prizes in the Chopin, Geza Anda, Montréal and Queen Elisabeth international competitions. In addition, he was the recipi ent of 1991 Avery Fisher Career Grant. He has been a jury member in international piano competitions such as the Shenzhen, Shanghai, Van Cliburn, Ferruccio Busoni, and Honens international competitions. 

Born in Taiwan and raised in Germany, Hung-Kuan Chen joined the faculty of Boston University in 1984 and was later named ​“Distinguished Artist in Residence” at Mount Royal Conservatory in Calgary. After taking a position as Chairman of the piano department at the Shanghai Con servatory of Music from 2005 to 2008, he then joined the piano department at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston in 2009, and subsequently joined the Faculty at Yale University in 2010. He has recently accepted Juilliard’s invitation to join its team as a full time professor starting September 2014.
