Born in Berlin, Edda Moser is the daughter of musicologist Hans Joachim Moser. She made her debut as Kate Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1962 and joined the Wiener Staatsoper in 1971.
She made her American debut in November 1968, when she appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in the role of Wellgunde in Wagner’s Das Rheingold. She went on to sing various roles there over nine seasons, including the parts of the Queen of the Night (Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte), Liù (Puccini’s Turandot) as well as of Donna Anna (Mozart’s Don Giovanni). She reprised this role in 1979 under the musical direction of Maestro Lorin Maazel in Joseph Losey’s renowned movie, Don Giovanni. She was one of the original performers of Hans Werner Henze’s oratorio Das Floß der Medusa, in 1968.
Her recording of the Queen of the Night’s aria Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen is on the Voyager Golden Record which was included aboard both Voyager spacecrafts launched by NASA in 1977.
After retiring from the opera world, Edda Moser remained active as a recitalist until the late 1990s and gave her farewell performance in Munich in 1999 at the Cuvilliés Theater. In 2006, she founded the yearly Festspiel der Deutschen Sprache (Festival of German language). Since 1985, she is a professor of singing at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne.
