Arie Van Lysebeth began playing the violin at the age of four. He did his graduate studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he learned piano, bassoon, chamber music and conducting. Laureate ex æquo of the Prague Spring International Music Competition, he served as solo bassoonist with the Belgian Radio Television Orchestra. After studying conducting with Bruno Maderna and Pierre Boulez, he conducted the Flemish Orchestra of Brussels, both in Belgium and abroad, from 1970 to 1994. As a guest conductor, he led major orchestras in Belgium, as well as in the United States, Argentina, Taiwan, Great Britain, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Italy and Germany, working with such renowned soloists as Igor Oistrakh, José Van Dam, Murray Perahia and Augustin Dumay. A long-time professor at the Brussels Royal Conservatory (Flemish section), where he served as Director from 1994 to 2003, Arie Van Lysebeth is currently President of the jury of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium and President of the Artistic Committee of the Queen Elisabeth Music Foundation of Belgium. Since the last ten years, he is the conductor of the Orchestre symphonique du Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. Recently, he conducted the English Chamber Orchestra in a Mozart concert.
