Born in Osaka, Akiko Ebi began studying piano at the age of three-and-a-half. In 1973, after taking first prize at the National Music Competition of Japan, she was invited by the French Government to pursue her training in Paris at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, where she studied with Aldo Ciccolini, Marie-Claire Laroche and Colette Zerah. In 1975, she was a laureate of the Concours International de piano Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud and, in 1980, a finalist of the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Jury Chairman Martha Argerich remarked on the pianistic quality and exceptional sensitivity of her performance.
Akiko Ebi has played with some of the leading orchestras and is a regular guest performer at numerous festivals, including La Roque d’Anthéron, the Chopin Festival in Paris and the 2nd Martha Argerich Festival in Bepou, Japan. In August and September 2003, she was invited to sit as a member of the jury of the 2nd International Martha Argerich Competition in Buenos Aires.
