Stefan Lano has had a distinguished career as composer, pianist, and conductor. After completing a doctorate at Harvard University he pursued advanced musical studies in Berlin. He has conducted at major operatic centres throughout the world. Recent triumphs include Turandot at the Hamburg State Opera, the world première of Mayako Kubo’s Rashomon in Graz, Le Nozze di Figaro and La Bohème in Munich, and highly acclaimed productions of The Rake’s Progress and Jenufa in Basel (Switzerland).
In the United States he has conducted notable productions at the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and the St. Louis Opera.
Mr. Lano is a much sought-after conductor in South America where the Association of Argentine Music Critics has named him “Best Foreign Conductor.” His debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires (1993) conducting Berg’s Lulu was praised by the press as one of the most significant in the history of the theatre. Since then, Lano has been a regular guest at the Teatro Colón., conducting Wozzeck, Bluebeard’s Castle, and Salome.
Mr. Lano is also a distinguished composer whose dossier includes numerous works for chamber ensemble, orchestra, and voice. He has recently completed his Third Symphony. He lives with his wife and daughter in Switzerland.
