Jean-Marie Zeitouni has emerged as one of Canada’s
brightest young conductors whose eloquent yet fiery
style in repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music results in regular re-engagements across Canada and the United States. His association with Les Violons du Roy goes back seven years, first as conductor-inresidence, then as associate conductor and, since 2007,as first guest conductor. His CD with the ensemble, entitled “Piazzolla,” won a JUNO Award for Classical Album Of The Year in the Solo or Chamber Ensemblecategory in 2007.
Prior to Les Violons du Roy, he was assistant conductor
and chorus master at Opéra de Montréal and music
director of the company’s Atelier lyrique, music director
of the Young Artist Opera Program at the Banff Centre,
choir director of the Orchestre symphonique de Québec and the Opéra de Québec, and director of the orchestra and opera workshop at Laval University.
In 2008 – 2009, in addition to leading opera productions
of Lucia di Lammermoorby Donizetti (Cincinnati Opera),
Faust by Gounod (Calgary Opera), and Il Re Pastore by
Mozart (Opera Theatre of St. Louis), he will debut with
the Vancouver, Houston, Colorado, San Antonio, Oregon and Omaha symphonies, as well as appearing
with the Handel & Haydn Society (Boston), at the
Round Top (Texas) and Grant Park (Illinois) Festivals,
and at the Festival de Lanaudière.
Highlights in recent seasons include appearances with
the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Orchestre
symphonique de Québec, the National Arts Centre
Orchestra,the Edmonton,Honolulu,Monterey,Huntsville
and Xalapa symphonies, the National Symphony of
Mexico, as well as opera engagements with Banff,
Calgary, Edmonton, Glimmerglass, Cincinnati operas,
the Opéra de Québec, and Opéra de Montréal.
